If the brake lights are not working, the problem may be the stop / hazzard fuse. If the brake lights are working, the problem may be the hazzard flasher - it is located in the "convenience center", along with the audio indicator & horn relay, under the driver's side dash, or the hazzard switch in the column.

the brake lights work, is the relay the only other component besides the actual switch?

Yes, the hazard flasher and the hazard switch are the only 2 components in the hazard circuit after the fuse.
