Firebird Headlight Problem

My 86 Bird has a wierd headlight problem. The headlights will not pop up if the parking lights come on. For example, when I push the button on the dash I have to do it real slow so the parking lights do not come on otherwise the motors will stop.

I have replaced the switch on the dash, but it didn't fix the problem. The headlights will come on whether the doors are up or down.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dale

Under my dash there is a connector with a diode in it but the diode is broken. One of the wires going to it is brown/white stripe. Could this diode be the problem?? I found a matching diode in a bird in the junkyard but haven't put it in yet. Will this solve the problem?

Thanks Dale

I had the same headlight problem in my 86 Firebird. I replaced the headlight motor isolation relay which solved the problem. You will probably have to get this from a Pontiac dealer, I wouldn't recommend a used one. Make sure you get the isolation relay, not the two actuator relays. It is mounted on the radiator support on the passenger side in between the radiator, and the air filter assembly above the 12 volt distribution block. It will be easier to see if you remove the air filter assembly. I would also recommend checking the ground wire going to the relay, mine was corroded.
