LT1 MAF on a 3rd gen

Does anyone know if it is possible to put a LT1 style MAF on a 3rd gen if the computer is reprogrammed for it? My Car seems to have breathing problems. Even with a modified Stock MAF.

JJ,

Welcome aboard!

The stock Bosch MAF outputs an analog voltage signal from 0-5VDC. The Delco MAF on the LT1/4 outputs a 5VDC P-P digital signal, frequency modulated from about 5% duty cycle to 80% duty cycle. Unless you want to contruct a D/A converter and scale it for the older ECM, you're stuck with the older style MAF.

If you do a search of the archives on this site, you'll find a lot of data on MAF flows. Even a modified Bosch MAF can have limitations. You might want to check into a Wells SU-145 MAF. It is basically a clone of the LT1 style MAF, except it outputs the required analog signal. It uses teh thick-film sensing element like the LT1, eliminates teh two round wire screens on the inlet and outlet of the MAF in favor of a flat metal matrix (like the LT1), and has no sampling tube or heat sink fins in the air stream to impede flow, like the LT1. It also has a slightly larger I.D. than the Bosch MAF, and a minimum of 73mm at the smallest point and 78mm at its largest, as opposed to 70mm on the Bosch unit.

Directly plugs in and is scaled for the ECM, right out of the box.

You can get the Wells MAF from World Discount Auto Parts ((800) 288-6728 Ext 115) for about $160 last time I checked..... Ask to speak to Tom Martin I believe.
