$20 Bucks. WalMart auto section. Hooks directly to the prongs where a dealer would hook the diagnostics tool up to. Comes with manual to explain codes. Codes are pulled after this piece is connected, and by the service engine soon light flashing a certain number of times. Example: "flash, pause, flash, flash"...code 12-ECM check. Its all in the manual. Very easy to understand and use. There is also a tech article on this board that gives you all the trouble codes, and a diagram to show you how to use a paperclip to get the same results. Hope this helps.

Worm,

I'll sell you a "code reader" for a lot less than $20.00. Check this file for all instructions and decoding, and get two paper clips (one to hold together the printed sheets, and one for the "code scanner":

GM Error Codes.pdf

You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print the file (see link below).

I know all about the aldl connection and how to read the codes but I was hoping to get a better tool to see what the computer is doing. I would like to see exactly what the car is telling the sensors and vice versa. I am thinking of getting into burning chips but I am still collecting info from posts. It will take me awhile.

Diacom has a decent package for actively reading the ECM data bus, but it's a lot more than twenty bucks, and I don't think you'll find one at WalMart.
