The Alternator switch

I posted something about the alt switch that I wired for track use and was just wondering if anyone else had heard of it. I wired an interupt switch that ungrounds the alt. I use it during runs to take the load off the engine. It is good for at least a tenth. Just wondering if anyone else has done it.

Wouldnt the only way to take the load off the engine be to take it off the belt?

That's an old racers trick that is supposed to give a couple HP, but then you are talking about on old carbed, points ig. cars. You are making the pump, injectors, etc. run on less voltage by doing this in an EFI car, and probably are doing more harm than good.

IIRC, 746 Watts= 1HP. If you have a 100 amp alt, charging at a 13.2V output, at maximum current it's power is equal to 1320 Watts, almost 1.8 HP. remember you can't get more out than you put in, power out = power in minus frictional losses. Even if you include frictional losses, you probably only see about a 3hp gain. You could pick up more ET by putting duct tape over your headlights to reduce the drag produced by the headlight pockets. If you want to prove this wrong, or right, give it a try next time down the 1320.
