How accurate is home made A/F moniter?
Hey guys,
Any idea how accurate something like this would be?
http://www.students.tut.fi/~eppu/dev/EGO-bar.html
I think I found the link in Skulte's logbook on the Z28TT site. Anyways, just wondering if it would be worth the work to help me tune my carb. Sort of a fun project too I think.

Well like the guy says:
If you want an accurate A/F meter you have to step up to a wideband sensor which can run towards big bucks. This would work okay for gross adjustments though.

You are also supposed to know what can be done with the sensor, and what can not. A basic EGO sensor cannot measure true oxygen content in automotive environment, nor does it tell you the exact lambda value. If you're looking for an accurate exhaust gas analyzer, you won't find it here. There might be better ways to use a zirconium dioxide sensor to measure oxygen content, but we don't use them here.
The LED colors give only an approximate information of what can be happening with the A/F-mixture. You cannot connect any unambiguous mixture ratio values to different sensor voltage levels.
This is usually enough for the purposes I, and many others use these sensors. An EGO sensor can quickly detect grossly incorrect situations, like a way too lean or too rich mixture under hard acceleration, transient mixture spikes that can't be captured otherwise, and other weird situations affecting driveability.

It really said all that on there? Feel stupid I missed it now. I guess since I was looking at two diagrams I really checked out the other one and ended up posting this one. So basically the accuracy comes from the O2 sensor. To get entirely accurate I'd have to spring for a wideband sensor, which wouldn't be worth it for me. But, since I have an O2 sensor at home, and all the needed electrical components left over from circuits lab here at school I'll probably do it anyways. Thanks for the input.

Am I correct in saying that this has nothing to do with the ECM? If I were to convert my car to a carb, this would still work..... Little gadgets like this have the potential to really kick the interior of your car up a notch.
Yep, you'd be correct in saying that. It's just the ratio of air to fuel read by your oxygen sensor in your exhaust.
