temp gauge. doesnt read, anything

ok my temp gauge doesnt read anything at all. its either pegged or doesnt read, once in a great while it will read. but then it reads really hot.
i was worried for a while, but then i got to know my car, and i knew when it was hold and cold.
now i am starting to fix all that small stuff. and i just found the temp sensor.
its in the block just below the head, and when i pull it out will a bunch of antifreeze come pouring out? i thinks that my problem, atleast i hope. i was also told to check the wire to see if it was cut or burnt but it didnt look that way. and what if it was?
also how does the sensor read. the end of it slides in the sensors little clip right, its totally different from the sensor on my S10. just curious!

thanks anyone

Yes, you'll get coolant pouring out when you remove the gauge sensor. It reads by using resistance to ground as the unit warms up. The gauge will peg out if the wire is short to ground, read nothing if there's no continuity to ground. It's a simple push-on clip connection. FYI, the gauge may not read right, or possibly not at all if you use teflon sealing tape on the threads. Hope this helps some.
