Tachometer doesn't work
Tachometer doesn't work
I just bought an 87 Camaro with the LG4 (305 carb) that I intend to drop my 383 in soon. In the meantime I would like to see the Tachometer working.
I don't have any wiring diagrams yet. Is there a quick and easy first place to check or are they prone to failure?
The needle does bump just a tad when I turn the key on.

Well I found the quick and easy first place to check. There is no wire connected to the TACH post on the distributor. Duh!
I don't see a TACH filter (1/2 x 1 1/2 cylinder) mounted on the firewall just behind the distributor. I understand that not all vehicles have one (?).
What color wire should I be looking for?
There are no wires laying around in the vicinity, just waiting to be plugged in.
I do see a Purple wire sticking out of a harness nearby that has been clipped off.
I notice that the Air Pump has been removed so it's not a virgin under the hood, although it seems basically stock.
Any clues would be appreciated.

It all depends on what type of HEI setup you have. If you have a internal coil "coil in the cap" then you will have a brown wire for the tach. But if you have a external coil "coil sitting off of the cap" then you will have a white wire for the tach. I hoped I helped ya out.

Thanks IDRAG2....Mine has the coil in the cap.
I could not find a Tach Filter nor could I find the proper wire so I pulled the dash apart and hooked a wire from the Coil post on the back side of the Tach directly to the Tach post on the distributor.
It works!
I haven't had a chance to test it beyond the driveway and just hope it doesn't cause some other problem, by not going through a filter.
