iac valve and cooling fans not working :(
hi,
i've posted on about this problem on the tech board and not gotten any insight as to waht could be causing it... my iac valve and cooling fans decided to jsut stop working while i was driving a few weeks ago, causing the car to idle really high and overheat. by jumping the a and b terminals on the aldl and turning the ignition to on, i can get the iac valve to close, and the cooling fan on the drivers side runs, but with the car running normally the cooling fans won't go on (even with the temp guage well over 220) and the car won't idle below 1500 with the iac connected. I've looked for loose grounds or connections but haven't found any... although there are 2 wiring connectors behind the dash by the ecm just sitting there not connected to anything, but there's nothing to connect them to anywhere. i assume those are jsut for some option i don't have on my car? what could be causing this problem?!?!????
thanks for any help
Jeff

Sorry to tell you, but if you have the stock fan switch in your pass. head, your fan isn't going to come on til you hit about 239*. Pretty hot, huh? Alot of us have put in a "hypertech" or "jet" fan switch, which brings the fan on at a much cooler temp. The one I have comes on at 200, off at 185. There's one that comes on earlier than that. I'm assuming you have the dual fans, and the second one operates with your A/C system, regardless of the temp. If you turn on your A/C, that fan is going to come on. If you're set up stock still, the only time those fans should be running is if you have a really hot motor...

yeah i knew it was some ridiculously high temp, when it first started doing this the temp guage was past the red zone before i realized it was overheating , and i'm pretty sure the fan never came on... oh i guess i should have mentioned that even with the ac on the ac fan doesn't come on... the only time i can get a fan to run is if the aldl terminals are jumped... i'm thinking the fans have probably always been like this and i'm only noticing it now cause this is the first time the engine has heated up so bad.
i guess i should also add that i've checked the tps and it is working properly, and the car idles nicely at 500 rpm with the iac disconnected, but as soon as i plug it in, the idle jumps up to 1700 and won't come down untill i shut off the car and jump the aldl... i've searched the boards and found other high idle problems but no solutions...

well i went around pulling apart and reconnecting every sensor on the engine, crossed my fingers and started the car, and now it idles normally. must have been a bad connection somewhere, i don't know why the computer wasn't throwing a code but at least it's running now... thanks for the input
