Funky Firebird Headlights
Funky Firebird Headlights
I have this problem with the headlight doors. Sometimes when they won't come up until I drive for a while. My car has daytime running lights so that should make them come up when it's dark and the switch also doesn't do anything. I can see that the headlights are on but they point at the ground. If they don't work right away they will after about a minute of driving and they stay working.
I read in the manual there are some self-resetting circuit breakers for the headlight doors. Could these have something to do with the problem? It sucks driving in stealth mode at night.

your motors are about shot...
chances are the gears are getting stripped out and when you drive around, the wind gets under them and helps lift them until the motor catchs and then finishes the job.
just my thoughts...

Another thing I remembered...
One time my friend went up to my car and pressed the headlight switch and only one light came up and it wouldn't go back down. I thought "screw this", and manually put it back, then both didn't work. I came back a few hours later and they worked again. Nobody touched the car during that time.
I have a set of junkyard motors I could try. Do they take long to swap in?

OK, I tested the motors by connecting them directly to the battery and they're fine.
The problem has nothing to do with driving around. If I flip them on and off a few times they eventually stop. Then after awhile they work again. It's like they need time to recharge or something.
The manual says that there are circuit breakers for the headlight doors but I could only find 2 15 amp fuses. Are the breakers built into that black plastic box where the fuses plug in? If the breakers do exist then that could be why it works again after waiting awhile, right?

I had the same problem with mine. It was the diode in the isolation relay that was shot...
You could try and replace this diode (the relay was next to the fan in my car) but you'll need a hacksaw to gain acces to the inside of the relay..or you could find a replacement from the junkyard...be sure to get the isolation relay and not the actuator relays as they haven't got the diode in there..

don't forget it is possible to replace the firebird motors with fiero motors. . .
sounds like a bad swap, but an option (fiero left=firebird right and firebird left=fiero right)
Right guys?
