Blown Ignition

On Friday night I hopped in my car to run up to the store and get some smokes, ran in and back out and my car was dead, couple of clicks and then nothing.
Talked the next guy that drove up for a jump,
tried for several minutes but just could not get enough juice in the system to turn the motor over. He had a battery that has the small window on the top that green light shows when the battery is fully charged and it was black. Was going to get a friend to tow me back home but the cashier said she could jump me and said she had a new battery. OK. Hooked up everything and she raced the engine for about a minute and then I had just enough to kick it over. I idled it home (just around the corner).
Next day took the battery out and could not charge it up, in fact after about 10 minutes it was getting my charger smoking hot.
Replaced the battery and then could turn it over no problem but was not getting any spark. Took the distributor cap off and there was a ton of corrosion where the coil wire hooks up and also on the inside of the cap on each pickup. Looked like 8 cacoons on the iside of the cap. Tested the coil and it was toast, replaced it, still no spark. Checked my msd and it was not sending any power to the coil. I drilled off the corner rivets that hold the box together and as soon as I opened it I could smell a burnt electrical parts smell. I hooked the stock connections back up and the car is running again.
It seems like with all that corrosion the resistance got too high and the coil "backfired"?? and blew out my msd and my battery?? Is that possible??

Battery was a AC Delco Professional 7 year and was almost 4 years old so it was due.
