Would a digital climate control work in an IROC?
Is this possible? I don't like the traditional slider controls, and was wondering how hard it would be to wire up the electronic climate control from the Digital GTA... it looks like it would just fit right in there.

Fit probably would be the least of your problems. I'll have to agree on the kind of dated layout of the HVAC controls. I'e looked around thru junkyards and it seems a good amout of GM controls are the same size & design until you get to electronic contorls. That's the 1st digi dash(yuk) I've seen(in a t/a) & personally,, I'm kind of glad I've got regular gauges in my bird
Based on replacng the controls in my camaro, the controls use a switching valve that controls vacuum to the actuators for the vents and a solid cable to control the heat/cool flap.
I wanted the controls out of a Fiero (simlar to what's in the pic) but,, from what I could see is it controls something else electronically to switch the vents. Guessing,, the T/A one works in a similar fashion to the Fiero. I would say you'd need all the components that go along with the HVAC controls to have everything right.
*this is only assumption based on that I believe it would have been to hard/costly (in the years these cars were made) to make an electronically switched vacuum control valve on something as small as the HVAC control unit & have it still fit where it is.

So what exactly is the difference between new electronic units and our HVac? Are most new units using electronic doors to open and close vents or are they still vacuum? I would love to convert my system to a piece of electronics. What cars would you look at if you were going to try this swap?

I'd love to be able to answer factually because I really don't care much for the manual controls myself. Unfortuantly, I haven't had the time when looking for parts in the junkyard to dig deeper into how the electronic HVAC system work.

I've been thinking about doing this for some time now. I havent made it to the junkyard yet in search of Digital controls, so I dont know exactly how they function. Can anyone tell us what cars came with a digital, or at least a halfway decent looking AC control unit?

The digital Firebird GTA came with one. I believe that those were made in '87 and '88, someone correct me if I'm wrong. The digital Camaro Berlinettas also came with an electronic climate control, but I think it was located on one of the dashboard "pods" and not where the standard equipment was located.
