Could my tach be wrong?

After installing my MSD 6AL box, my tach was reading wrong, so I purchased the tach adapter to cure the problem. It didn't work. I got the same reading with and without the adapter. Could it be that my tach is not calibrated correctly or what? What can I do about this?

Did you connect the white wire going to the tach to the tach output (spade terminal) on the MSD-6AL box?

I have tried connecting the white wire directly to the box, and I have connected the white wire to the purple wire on the tach adapter (running a MSD Magnetic Pickup Distributor) I get the same reading with both, except when I run it without the adapter the needle bounces around after 4000rpm.
