Ready to Rebuild Headlight Motors

OK...I have read all the posts on the headlights and replaced the relay and checked all the wiring. My headlights come on, but won't go up all the time. They work first thing in the morning (cold) so I believe I need to tear into them and replace the grease with ball bearings. Thanks to Steve's Trans Am Temple for the great "instructions" on how-to. ANY LAST MINUTE THOUGHTS ARE APPRECIATED. ENCOURAGEMENT ACCEPTED. THANKS, MARK

Tore into the motors last night and they have already been rebuilt with direct drive, thicker gears. Now I'm really stumped. Only thing I haven't replaced is the console switch. Motors will spin and put headlights down. They don't spin at all or put up the lights. ?????????

You're not actually replacing grease with ball bearings, you're replacing the shredded pieces of plastic that "used" to be rubber bearings. Once you slide the plastic gear off of the metal spindle you may get a bunch of plastic to pour out - that was your bearings. The steel bearings sit in pockets inside the plastic gear, and the metal spindle has indentations in it to go around the bearings.

Did that sound rational? What do you mean when you say "direct drive?"

Steve...That isn't my problem I don't think. I opened the motors following your instructions and found larger gears than you had pictured with Large clover-leaf solid direct drives instead of the ball bearing slots. How many relays are there on the 87-on headlights? I replaced the one next to the battery. The 2 over behind the air cleaner are for the electric fans. Someone said there was one up near the master cylinder with "GUIDE" on it.
