Electrical Problem Car Quit on Freeway

Please someone give me some advice on this problem. Last night on the way home my 92 V6 Firebird Just shut down on the Freeway at 1:00am in the morning. The Altenator seems to be good. The battery is not even a year old yet.The car will turn over it just wont start at all. Not even a hint of it wanting to kick over. The only electrical mod to the car is the alarm and it is working fine and has worked for the ten years since the car was new. While sitting inside the car it smells like something electrical burned. Under the hood I cannot smell anything or see anything that could have burned up. I have not checked the fuse block yet to see if any of the fuses are blown. All things electrical in the car seem to be working such as Radio, Lights, Trouble lights, Defroster, Electric windows. Didn't check the horn to see if it is working though.
If anyone has experienced something similar to this please point me in the right direction so that I don't waste too much time looking. I know the first thing I am doing when I get home is to check the fuses but I have never had one blow on me and leave a smell that I had last night. And thanks in advance to all the people that may respond to this, also to everyones post over the years that I have read and used to help me fix things on both of my 92 Firebirds.

Sounds like you blew a fusible link between the starter and the battery.

Sounds to me like you could have a fuel problem. I would check the injector fuse and the wires going to the injectors for any frays in the wire that could have blown the fuse. Also if the fuel pump in the tank goes out you can turn the car over all day and it won't start. Listen to for the pump to come on when the ignition is on. If you can't hear it then it could be weak and not producing enough pressure. Good luck

if it just died, do the basics, does your interior lights turn on? if so, not batt.

next listen to your fuel pump, do you hear the elec. fuel pump come on when you turn the keys to run? if so, not pump.

check for spark in first spark plug wire (USE CAUTION!!!) ***have someone with know-how do this!!! if no spark, could be anything from the wire to the cap to the rotor to the ignition module.

hope this helps.

The fuel pump may still whine even though it may be bad. When it went out in my car, you could hear it and everything sounded ok, but it couldn't supply enough pressure and volume. And if the pump does this(sometimes without any warning) the the car will just quit running. Did your car by any chance seem like it was running out of gas when it quit? But then again you could have an ignition problem instead. Nevertheless electrical problems are the worst.

So the car does turn over, but just doesn't fire?

If that's the case, it should either be no spark or no fuel. (the only other thing that causes a no start would be bad timing, which doesn't really make sense here).

To check for fuel, first make sure you can hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key "on". Then check the fuel pressure. On a TPI it's on the fuel rail but I'm not too familiare with v6's. A haynes/chiltons manual should tell you how.

If you have fuel, check fore spark. Like somebody else said, basically you can take out a spark plug, put it back it the plug wire boot, and ground the side of plug, watching for a nice arc. be careful not to getted shocked though.

One of these should fail. If you come back with the resultes, we should be able to help you more. BTW, i went through something similar this summer and it ended up being the pickup coil. Hope that helps ~Arnold
