How to fix broken tach?

At 75 mph my tach reads at 4500 rpms. Thats with the tranny in overdrive and i only have 2.73 gears. Is the tach the problem or is there something else in the circuit causing it to read funky. Thanks

hook up an aftermarket tachometer and see what you get for readings.

the engine could well be spinning at 4500RPM if you've got a slipping tranny.

At idle when the gauge tach reads 2600 rpms the engine analyzer i hooked up has the rpms at about 700.
