Stolen Car
Stolen Car
Need help!!! My IROC was stolen.. needless to say two weeks later it was found. Only thing is that on the steering column just next to the turn signal arm is where they jumped started the car. I've tried several times to start the car but cannot, can anyone make any suggestions. Do I need a new steering column ? The key turns but no contact to start the car.please help . Also if anyone knows of a website for IROC parts, Im in need of a passenger door, passenger front fender , and a IROC hood.
Steering columns can be repaired, but it my opinion, it's not worth paying someone to do it, or going through the hassle of doing it yourself. It's much easier to replace the entire column.
You should be able to get a used column, with key, for anywhere from $50-200. Make sure it has the same options as your car..... cruise, delay wipers, tilt..... upgrade to tilt if you don't have it already.... although non-tilt columns are a little harder to steal.
If your car has VATS (resistor pellet in the ignition key), make sure your used column has VATS as well. STILL, you'll need to make a key copy...... with the used column's key notches, but your old column's resistor pellet code. Just clearly explain that when you get the key copied.
But to answer your original question, there are a few possible reasons for why the car won't start.
Of course, as mere coincidence, there's a chance the the starter went bad sometime while the thieves had the car, but probably not.
Firstly, maybe you're not able to slide the column rod all the way to Start. Try it again with the wheel tilted into different positions.
If your car has VATS, the thieves had to bypass it somehow; maybe whatever modification they made has come loose. Go under the dash, and find two white wires inside an orange tube. If they've been cut, reconnect them. Then, insert your original key into the ignition before starting with the screwdriver.
You said you needed a door and such...I would get out the Yellow Pages and start calling local junkyards. But if you're willing to pay top dollar, call Camaro Heaven at 1-800-CAMARO-1. Also, look on eBay.

I'll have to agree w/Chris. I've put 2 columns in my camaro. It takes roughly about 1-2 hours if you have a few tools handy.
I paid $20 for the 1st one (that I eventually broke) & $25 for the 2nd at a u-pull yard.
Ignition cylinders are available at autozone for a fair price. I don't know if they can have VATS cylinders though.
Does the car get any power w/the key (or just cylinder) turned ?
There is a rod that runs thru the column to a switch close to the brake pedal (mounted on the steering column though). There is also a cable that runs into the switch that is connected to the shifter. If the shifter was racked out of gear, chances are the switch could be just about destroyed.
