Jumping tach, car dies, then no power

I have had this problem for a while now. The tach begins to bounce and up and down (actual RPMs do not change) then the all power disapears and the car dies. If the car is moving it will kick itself back on (5 speed). If I am at a stop it will just loose all power. No juice to anything. After a short time I can start it and it will run fine. It has been doing this on and off for nearly a year. At one point it went away for months.
I have searched the forums and found others with the bouncing tach problem, but I need more ideas. Battery, wires. cap and rotor are all new.

Is there a main curcuit breaker anywhere?

I thought the ignition module is either good or bad, is this true?

Any ideas? I am afraid to drive the thing.

Same here. New coil helped engine run better, Took the car for a drive and it just wouldn't start (tach jumped around).I susspect battery, cable connection, alternator screwup. There was also a plug in connector red wire near (10 inches) the battery that I re-seated.

The two wires plugged into the distributor cap carry the power to run the distributor and the feed back to the tacho. It sounds like they are not plugged in properly.

Can Autozone or parts store test the control module(7 pin in dist.)?
How about the magnetic dist. pick-up?
A non-CC setup sounds so much easier. 57kid is the only person that defends the computer! ( Maybe he's switched already).

I think they can test the control module, but if it only goes out when hott, it will test OK. IF the pick up is out of the distributor, it might aswell be replaced. THey are real cheap.

My problem is that the tach wiggs out, then all power diaspears, but then it comes back on a short time latter.

No fuses or Links are blown
why would all power disapear at once after my tach wiggs out?

Some electrical plug must be loose somewhere, or that controll module. Mine all started when water dripped on the rotor cap causing the tac to act crazy and engine hardly start.
