Is the error consistant or does it fluctuate up and down?

yes it is. it shows about 15 thou at idle and goes up to about 45 thou at 50 mph. I have also just changed my dist. module as it crapped out on me over the weekend. This high rev reading is getting progressivly worse.

I've got a very similar problem iny my 82 Z28, https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=136420

Told to either get another tach/cluster, but I think I am just going to install an aftermarket tach ..

It really depends on what you want. they range in price, anywhere from about $80 to $400 ... the one I'm installing I got for $100 at PepBoys, it's a SunPro, white face, 10K rpm tach, internal LED shift light, with an external shift light. It's also a slim design, so you can mount it in tight places, like on the dash of an old school truck or something.

You can get a nice Autometer tach for around $150-$200, has an external shiftlight.
