Can a fusible link work on and off?

Is it possible that a fusible link is causing my tach to jump then all power turn off? I can't find a short and the problem doesn't stick around long enough to find the source. Tim Burgess suggested that a fusible link can work its way loose from inside.
Anyone experience this?

A friend of mine with an '84 Z had about the same problem until his link burned up completely. So, yes, a fuseable link can cause intermittant "power outages" to the engine in a car.
