ENGINE LIGHT/RPM PROBLEM????
I have an 86 Trans Am, 305, carb. My engine light blinks rapidly when engine is running and when I press the gas the RPM flutters and when I give it more gas the engine light blinks even faster...when I get the RPMs up to about 3000 the needle goes all the way down then back up and so on. I've hooked it to a computer but all it says is "NO DATA". I've never seen this happen before. I'm thinking its the computer or the distributor...but knowbody knows for sure.......PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN.

Relax and dont spend any money until you know what the fault is.
Put a jumper or buy a $35 rip off jumper in a box, across the appropriate terminals on the computer analyser connector - near your right knee in the car, turn on the ignition and check the flashes the check engine light gives. It will flash the number 12 three times, then start flashing the fault codes.
The flashes are in two groups, so it flasshes once, waits then flashes twice, that is code 12. It does it three times, then flashes the fault codes. There may be several.
when it gets back to flashing 12 you have all the codes. Post them and we can see what the problem is.
Even when you have fixed the fault, you have to clear the codes or you still get the warning.

Thanks again
hi ,im new to this myself, but im learning from me own troubles,(see thread "service engine light ??) try pulling the ecm down(u have to un clip the wire clamp from just above the carpet on the inside of the firewall) and with the engine running lightly tap ur fingers or a screwdriver handel on the case(bottom left hand corner made mine go crazy! lol ) & see if ur ses light fickers or goes off ? if it does ,i'll let u no if a new ecm cures it as soon as i get me new one
When you say it was on a computer, do you mean one of the garage ones? Or do you mean it flashed 12 then did not give any other faults or flashes?
If in doubt you could always clear all the codes and start over.

You'll need the manual to get the right connections, but I wonder if it is worth trying the jumper and counting the flashes. I'd have thought if the computer was fried you wouldn't get any flashing at all.
If it flashes when the engine is running and you get the fluttering, have you checked the timing. It seems unlikely several major components would have all failed together, also it sounds unlikely the computer is fried.
If you check the flashing and get no faults, try clearing the codes, then check the timing.
I wasn't sure if you can still get the engine to run?
