Advise on the H4 conversion - My story

I bought the "direct drop in" H4 conversion on ebay from some Kioto International seller. When I plugged them on, they were dim, or didn't work. I got my answer to that on these message boards. I needed a new harness with relays and a direct power source from the battery to the lights, instead of the stock routing, battery to switch to lights. Well, it seemed a little out of my league, so I went to the local car electrician. $300+ for labor, and that wasn't including any parts! I was about to just say screw it when I say a little thing in the Jegs sport compact section. I WAS BORED, I HATE R*CERS!!!!

I came to an interesting find, and decided to order it. It was a Painless wiring harness made for the H4 conversion in an older car. When I got it, all I had to do was plug one of my old connectors into it, and the 2 to my new bulbs. Then I grounded it and ran the last wire to the battery. I pulled the light swich, and VOILA! It worked! Here's the part # for anyone with similar problems:

Painless Performance Products - Headlight Relay Conversion Harness - P/N 30815 Jegs part # 764-30815

This isn't an advertisement or anything, just want other people to have it easier than I did!

The H4 conversion is the "blue" headlight setup avalible for the 3rd generation Camaro's and Firebirds.

I also bought those lights and they are VERY dim with stock wiring. I'm going to try and just hotwire them directly to the battery to see if it improves any. I'm in the process of doing some more wiring to the car, hopefully this fixes the issue.
Aaron, did yours come with the little blue parking lamps build in and with that "oncoming traffic bulb cover" sheild? If so, then we've got the same units. I'm junking these bulbs. They're so cheap and don't work on the low beam setting. It's SO dim that my little flashlight works better. Even the high beam setting is dim. Not to mention the beam projection isn't flat, it's round so it's more like driving lights. You'd be best off going with a set of $20 fog lights that light up the sides of the road and using the headlights for the road.

Yes, mine have the blue lights in the corners. If yours are dim, you definately should disconnect them and put the stock ones back in. Those lights are trying to pull too much power thry the small stock wires and may cause overheating, leading to a possible fire! I had the same problem, but got the harness and all is well now. I also have the stock foglights, but added the blue Xenon bulbs to those as well. Now with the low beams and the fog lights, I can see forever down the road!

Damn guy's, what timing...lol I found this kit on ebay and I'm trying to get it (my Christmas present from my parents) Now if I buy 2 kits, will my high beams work with these bulbs? meaning after I hook up the bulbs and pull the lever for my high beams, will they get brighter? To make sure these are the same kits we are talking about, here is the link: conversion kit

Thanks, Ted

Ok, looks the same. I thought of trying 2 kits, but you'd have to create your own wiring. I don't know if there are dual range H4 bulbs... y'know, they'd have 2 filaments, one for low beams, and both for high.

Oh ok, Ill just buy one set then. Maybe if they look totally different, I'll buy newer housings of the same style as th H4's. So tell me about the little blue marker lights. If you have them wired to your parking lights, then do they light up the inside of the housing blue?

Thanks, Ted

PS Do you have aol or AIM? my name on aol is DBIronmen3, it would be easier to talk

Well, I'd be careful with those. If you do get the light conversion, connect up the little blue bulb in the corner, you'll see that it makes the whole light as blue as the "blues" on a cop car. I guarantee that you'll get nailed for 'em! I put red ones in (My car is black with a red interior, and I have the Street Glow red's under the car, inside the car, etc.) and just turn those on when I'm at the track. With my headlights glowing red and the underside as well, it looks damn cool!

one more question, with this conversion can you now drill into the housing if you want to put strobes in it or something, or is it still a sealed beam like the stock ones?

Thanks, Ted

It's only a housing, the H4 bulb is the only sealed part. I'd say, drill away!

You can do pretty much the same thing with a couple of relays! I did this to my stock lights, and noticed a HUGE difference in brightness! I measured the voltage before(going through the stock wiring) at 10.5volts at the headlights, after a couple of relays triggering power directlly off the battery, it was 13volts. That is a 2.5 voltage increase at the lights, and they are as bright as (almost)any new vehicle!! Later!!!
