Alternator problems plse help?

ive posted before but hoping to here something again. my alt went bad and i got a new one from Autozone and put it on. just like before volt guage saying around 10 volt. and soon after that car dies after draining battery put another battery in and same thing so you would figure alt right? so went back and got another alt and doing same thing again.but notice something different this time when i had jumper cables on my 91 firebird and then put them on my 95 grand prix ,i think my grand prix's charge system was charging it cause my fb guage would then say 13 volt but the minute the cables were disconected voltage would drop quickly and it dont matter if headlights are on or not. i checked fusible link from alt to starter and its good so today im going to run it straight to battery.if you got any ideas let me know if that dont work taking it back to AZ.

I am begining to think that is your problem. I haven't seen one of these cars that as a wire going from the alternator to the starter. THere should be a main wire from the battery to the starter and yes it has a fused link. WHat kind of car is this, the year and the engine that is in it??? The only wire that goes anywhere near the starter on my TPI goes right to the battery, Not the starter. I'm thinking you have some wiring problems there.. Sound like you alternator is not charging your battery, it charging your starter. Let me know what car you have, and then I can try to figure this one out. But I bet when you hook a wire from the alternator to the battery it will show 13 or so volts on the guage. Make sure you usae a good guage wire like 10 guage at least. When your guage read only 10 volts, that is the battery by itself, with no charge.
