blower motor blows fuses..

blower motor blows fuses..

hmm that sounds kinda ironic.. anyway yesterday i go to turn my heat on.. it runs for like 4 secs then blows the fuse... replace fuse and try it again and it does the same thing... never had any trouble with it before. the only thing i have done recently is connect my fans to run with the ignition in the on position, however i ran no new wires from the column, they were already ran from the pervious owner and the fans were wired with the ignition for a few years actually.. all i did was clean up some of the wiring that went to the actual relays and replaced a blown relay.. as far as i know the only thing the wires to the column do is complete the ground for the the fans to run correct? i really cant think of a connection between these 2 but i thought i'd throw it out there... any ideas on where i should start? im guessing theres a short somewhere but where... i have no idea

I suggest you open the hood & disconnect the blower motor from the lead that powers it, then try it with a new fuse and see if the fuse survives with the blower disconnected.

The wiring jumble may be to blame, it's hard to say. It's also possible that the blower motor is sick and drawing excessive current.

Does it just do it on the highest fan speed or on any of the speeds? If it blows fuses at the lowest speed then it isn't likely the fan because the resistors will limit the amount of current available to the fan (even if the fan was shorted) to just a few Amps.

By the way, what was the blown relay that you replaced?

The various resistors that produce the multiple speeds of the fan are mounted in the air path downstream from the blower motor. It would be worth pulling the two screws that mount the resistors and checking to make sure they're not mangled or grounding to the body somehow.

well im not really sure if it does it on all speeds cause i only had 1 extra fuse.. the relays i was refering 2 are where my charcole canister would be mounted.. they have nothing to do with the car origionally... they are wired into the fans and controlled through a ground completed by the ignition switch.. the only wires i touched were the ones by the fans which is why i really cant think of any sort of connection to the blower motor becasue all the wires are right there and dont go anywhere really except the 2 grounds from the ignition switch... i fear its a wiring problem however do to all the fine wiring the previous owner did. thanks for the suggestions, i will first of course try it with the motor disconnected and see what happens.. at least that way i know for sure if its the motor or not..

yeah good idea try it with the motor disconnected..

since it started acting weird after you were messing around with the fans do the fans still work even after the blower motor stops working, just wondering..
