wires burning and melting under hood smoke from fan help!!
I dont know what happened but i was driving today and the fan started making this loud moaning sound and i didnt think much of it until the inside of the car filled up with smoke. I pulled over and popped the hood and on the drivers side near the windshield theres a bunch of wires hooked into this thing(still learning about the car just bought it) and the wires are smoking and melting on me, and the damn thing is extremely hot, whats wrong here?

I would need more detailed info on what is going on. My other car which is a 84 Z28 had a bunch of white smoke come out the hood but that was from the radiator busting on the side. That was caused from a burnt relay switch the led to the fan so nothing was cooling the car. Were all the wires burnt. If so what was it leading to and what was it coming from. It might be a relay??? But I am taking a guess.

i think it was a relay...all the wires are connected in a little black type box...the wires like melted and separated and sure enough the fan dont work, thats ok i dont like electronics so im gonna buy a drivebelt driven fan, no more worries! but the wires definitely were burned and on fire...what could cause this?

The moaning would [i]most likely[i/] be the fan bushings going south (the fan is locking up). The resistance caused by this will cook the relay and wiring to it.

I will ask my dad and give you an answer tommarow. He is a heavy line mechanic for GM so he should be able to tell me just give me a couple of days.
