Gas Gauge

I been trying to figure out why my gas gauge won't work and me and my bro are pretty sure its something with the fuel sending unit....i hear they are pretty costly so i was wondering if anyone has some ideas on what i can do and also if i might be able to grab one out a junk yard or something

i got a 90 camaro RS v8 305

A test to see if it's the sender or not would be to get an ohm/multi-meter, unplug the connector on the chassis right in front of the tank on the underside of the car, and test the purple wire for resistance. The gauge sender should read anywhere between 0-90 ohms. If you get nothing (and you know for a fact you have gas) then the sender is bad. If you get a reading at the tank, there is a short in the circuit somewhere.
