Coil Voltage

When the key is in the run position but the car is not running is the coil supposed to be getting 12v?
The coil is a msd blaster 3, connceted to a 6al box.

Yes, the coil is supposed to be powered when the key is on. Since it's in the "run" position, it would have to be, since the key returns to run after starting.

the reason i ask is because my car won't start after I hooked up my 6al and blaster 3 coil today. It cranks like it wants to start, but never does if i pump the gas pedal it will fire but will die out right after. SO i read the coil with the key in the on postion and it is not getting 12v. this is coming from a 6al box i read the power wires to the box and they are getting 12v. I'm fishing to see if the 6al might be bad, or if the coil is only charged with the car running, or when the engine is cranking

I had this EXACT same problem on my buddy's 91 RS. What engine, and exactly how did you hook up the 6AL?

The MSD 6 series is capacitive discharge, not inductive. The coil shouldn't have 12 volts on it.

Hmm... Oh yeah... lol You ever have someone say something to you and then you feel like an idiot? I have...

Either way, I had the same problem with a 6A box, I'm trying to remember exactly what we did to fix it....

It's a 91 z28 with a 383 motor. i have the 6al hooked like the schematic says. the 2 heavy wires directly to battery and ground. the orange and black to the coil, the red goes to both pinks, and the white goes to both whites. I'm gonna go to the parts store after school today and get a spark checker. I have 50 psi at the rail, and when i pull a plug after cranking the motor it's soaked in fuel, so i have the fuel. that's what leads me to belive i don't have the spark. but it puzzles me as to why it will fire if i pump the gas pedal. timing is not set it's at the initial 0*, should still fire.
