battery draining, can't find source

thanks for coming... ever since i got my car out this year the only thing i have done is take the msd box off and put the stock ignition back in. Now i have a problem of if i let it sit for a few days the battery is dead. Yeah, short somewhere right? well i've tried the tips of trying to find where a short is and i can absolutly not find one. my friend said his car did the same thing and it ended up being the alternator but i don't see that in my case, what else can i check or do. possible the battery is just bad? i just got a new one for it in july of 2001 so its not old. thanks

Like i said in some other threads, disconnect the battery Positive terminal, and reconnect it

if you hear a click-- a relay may be bad (that was my case) and the relay is stuck "ON" and it'll drain the battery

in my case--fuel pump relay

Also check and make sure your radio isn't on all of the time.

You'll need to connect an ammeter in the battery circuit. Make sure teh meter is capable of passing at least 10A (beyond the range of most cheapo multitesters). Normal standby current is around 35mA. Anything beyond 100mA or so indicates a device using current OTHER than the ECM and radio/clock standby.

Note the current, and if it's beyond that, start pulling fuses one at a time until the current drops significantly. That's your clue.

By any chance do you leave the rear decklid open? There is a relay that will energize when the power trunk is up. It took me damn near forever to track that one down...

Also check to make sure the hatch is closing all the way down. If it doesn't click the switch at the bottom the motor will continue to draw current and you may not here it.

Dont forget that the battery may also be stuffed. Just cos its new or near new it can have a shorted cell. It will charge ok but put it under heavy load like lights, demister etc all on and voltage will drop dramaticaly. Easy way to test it is to just disconnect it and let it sit disconnected for a couple of days. If it has a bad internal cell it will drain itself flat.
