89 camaro without a key

howdy folks, i recently bought a 89 camaro 305 auto from a friend for 400 bucks, heres the catch he had a key made but it doesnt have the lil chip thingy <not a tech> in it. So from what i read on here i need to bypass it, correct? But all this reading has pretty much confused me. Can someone explain to me how to bypass it so that even a hillbilly like myself can understand.
TIA

P.S.
he lost the original key @ six flags in arlington so if anyone go's there on vacation and finds it let me know

You need to find out the resistance of the chip in the original key. You can do this by putting a digital ohm meter to the original key, or take proof of ownership to a dealer and I think they can look it up by the VIN. Once you have identified the correct resistance you can either create a correct copy at the dealer, or buy a resistor and follow the steps in the tech article.

i was told there was something like 12 diff. keys made for the camaro...anyone possibly have a list of the 12 diff resistence setting on these keys? then i could just buy 12 resistors and pop them in one at a time till one worked.... i checked at my local dealer and they CAN check it but they want 75$ just to look and basically im pretty broke so im trying to find a alt. route to take
TIA

You can cycle through all 15 resistor values until you get the right one. There's a ~5 minute anti-scan delay after each incorrect value, so it'll probably take you a good chunk of time to get the right one though.

ok one more quick ques. i went to radio shack to get some resistors but i dont know really which ones to get ....they have 1/4 watt and 1/2 watt??
does anyone know the wattage of the ones i need? or does the wattage matter as long as i get the ohms right?

TIA

Im pretty sure as long as you get the ohms right the wattage dosnt matter. The Resistors in the keys are small themselves.
