Brake light problem. Need help.

My brake lights are out. It's not the bulbs, however, because my hazards still work, and every once in a while, the brake lights work. But for the most part they don't work. My friend told me that it's the brake light switch. Is that most likely it? If so, where is it and is it expensive to replace? Hard to replace? Thank you very much.

the brake light switch is hooked to the brake pedal under the dash, just look up under there and you'll see a whitish/cream color unit mounted to the brake pedal "arm" it should have a plunger that is connected to the "arm" and slides in and out of the switch when you press the pedal.
