Here is the story: Car runs great, starts, no problems. One day I come out and try and start the car...nothing. Not a sound (starter is working) it's just not getting power. At the time I thought it was the starter so I was out and about, come back hours later and say what the heck, couldn't hurt to try it now. Well guess what, it started right up. I turned it off and tried starting again, it did! Okay, so I drive it for a week or so and never have any problems even going from OH to NJ. Then I go from NJ to Detroit for our formula SAE compitition. I didn't have any troubles restarting the car every time I stopped for gas. Well it doesn't start when I get it to the Pontiac Silverdome. Next think I know I'm just futsing around with the trans "park/neutral" wires to make certain that didn't come loose. I've had that problem before. Anyways, after a few more no starts all of a suden the unexpected happens....the car starts. It doesn't only start, it does it with the key in the on position. It then starts grinding the starter so I turn it off. I go to put the car in the on position again and it starts!!! WTF. I've NEVER heard of this problem before. Okay, fiddle around with wires and unplug ALL fuses and put the key in "on". I proceed to plug in every fuse until the car starts. It ends up being the fuse for the turn signals
. Okay, whatever, must just be a short somewhere. I unplug the fuse and the car now only starts with the "start" position which is awesome. I finally figured out the problem. Well now I'm under the dash again today and now the key's "start" position isn't working. I haven't had a chance to go under the dash again and check to see if there is power getting to the column connectors (above the column in the hardest place to get too). In any case I HAD to get my car running so I put the key in the on position and used the turn signal fuse to start the car. I removed the fuse after it starts and the car runs.
I have a good feeling I'm on my own but I thought maybe somebody knew where the dark blue wire goes to from the back of the fuse block (it's for turn signals). The fuse gets power from the pink ignition wire and I noticed that the dark blue wire is grounded when there is no fuse. I'm assuming this is because it's shorted with the starter wire. Any ideas to entertain me before I rip apart the dash to follow the blue wire and remove the steering column?

Sounds like the ingnition switch to me, since it gives power to the turnsignals in the on position. The switch isn't that much, and if it is not the switch then you can rule it out. Then start chacing wires for the turn signals. Are all the turn signals working? All accesories?

I had almost that same problem when I first got my 90' Camaro RS. More than likely it is your ignition switch. Mine started alright (took a couple of cranks before it fully fired) but always started, then about 3 weeks after I had it it started when it felt like it. Luckily its a manual and could be very easily push started. Every-now-and-then though it would start just fine with the key. Finally I got fed up with it and knowing I would completely destroy the electical system of my car if I did it myself took it to a shop and had them take a look at it. Turns out, ignition switch. $150 later, my car starts just thinking about it. Cranks RIGHT up. Also, whats kinda funny now, is my clutch has been completely overridden, so I can start it without having to put the clutch in. Makes me eligable for remote start....
