Hatch Release Button Installation

Hi, I was wondering how I would go about installing a hatch release button on my 86 trans am. But the only problem is that I have a motorized latching system. So do I have to buy a regular latching system for my hatch if I wanted to install that button? And also, how do I find wire for it? How would I go about wiring it?

You can easily add a solenoid hatch release to your 1986 Firebird. The solenoid mounts in the same location as the manual release you currently have with a single 10mm bolt. That is tie simple part. You'll still have to wire the switch and relay to the correct circuit, then run the wire needs to be run back to the solenoid. You can cut the hole for the button with a Dremel tool and an abrasive cutoff wheel or a heated knife. Do yourself and get a 1986 Firebird Service Manual (aka HELM manual) if you don't have one already. They often show up on eBay or can be ordered new from www.helminc.com.

Good luck, Lon
