Is My Tach Hooked Up Wrong Or Is It Wrecked?

I swapped a 305 in place of the 2.8 in my car. The 305 is from an 81 Camaro. I did take the tach out of an 84 Z28 because I was told the V6 tach wont work. Now, I never got to try the tach in the Z28 before I put it in my car so it could be bad. But, it does jump a bit when you turn the car on(NOT in response to the motor though, just because it's getting power I guess), and it IS getting power, the oil pressure guage withing the tach is also not working, leading me to believe it is the guages that are no good. They are both getting power.

I put the plug from the 81 on the existing tach wire so it would plug into the distributor.

Are these signs that the tach is bad? Or maybe its something else? Help me out if you can guys. This is my first car and theres nothing worse than not having a tach....

Thanks A Lot

Eric

Well okay. No ideas huh, Last night my alternator quit working and while the car stilll had enough power to run the ignition system the tach would jump when i tunred my dash lights on and things. It is now completely pinned whereas it used to be at zero. I dunno if that helps.

Oh, and I noticed that it buzzs at a certain rpm although it still stays in one spot(pinned at 7000). This started last night with the alternator business.

You definetly have something hooked up wrong or a ground missing somewhere. The buzzing means it's frying if it stays pinned at 7000. I would find a way to disconnect until you can fix it. Or take the needle off... something.... Get ahold of some schematics for both your car and the Z and take a good look at the wiring around the tach and guages and see what's different.

Maybe you should just run a wire directly from the tack to the distributor... that of course unless u can't figure it out any other way.

Yeah I am running a wire from the dist. right to the tach tomorrow. I tried everything I could tonight and nothing worked. I'll sort the wiring out properly when I swap motors this summer.

Where would you suggest I run the wire through the fire wall at? Like where would it be the easiest to get at once its through kinda thing.

Thanks For The Help

Oh and the buzzing wasn't from the tach. I took it out and it still did it. Any ideas?
