Code 24 and no Lockup

I've got an 89 Camaro with a 350 TPI.

Today the converter wouldn't lock up and the problem was followed shortly by an SES light. I checked the computer and found a code 24.

After a bunch of searching on the boards I thought my problem was the VSS buffer. So off the the junkyard I went and got two but they were both out of Firebirds (25071437). I looked everywhere under the dash in my Camaro and couldn't find this same yellow box anywhere. There was something yellow behind the gauge cluster, but it didn't have the same connectors and wasn't the same size.

Any clue where it is or if it might be different from the firebirds? Any other help trouble-shooting this problem would be great.

Car: 1982 Trans Am & 1982 Corvette
Engine: L-98 with LO-3 induction. 350 CFI
Transmission: 5 speed and vette has 700r4
Axle/Gears: 373's in T/A .. vette unknown
89 firebirds had electronic speedometers, camaros still used mechanical ones, so you will find the speed sensor on the back of the speedometer.

Does the speedo work. If the cable or the drive mechanism in the trans fail the pulse generator mentioned in the speedo head won't send pulses to the VSS buffer. EGR as well as TC lock are controlled by the VSS signal.

Dears,

I am also experiencing the same kind of trouble (I believe), but my car is a 3.1 Firebird, and in my Haynes manual it looks like code 24 is not present in this case...however here is a description of my problem :

Once every hour of driving, I am loosing my speedometer, the needle just goes to zero and this lasts for a couple of seconds or a couple of minutes...during that period, the car is driving erratically and sometimes the engine even stall , but not always ( Most of the time I can continue to drive and go home with the car "behaving sluggish", so there is gas and sparks...

There seems to be no error code stored in the ECM (just code 12 of course)...I just put a new ECM in, but the problem is still there....since the problem is intermittent and disappears, it is very hard to diagnose and no mechanic can help me (I am living in Belgium, those cars are very seldom)....

My car is a Firebird from 1990 V6 3.1 automatic and with cruise control, and ADS SuperChip....I am getting desperate to find the source of the problem....any idea to solve this ? Did somebody experience the same and found a solution ??

What is the VSS buffer, is it easy to replace ? Could the problem be intermittent if linked to the VSS ???

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I am totally our of ideas...

Thanks

John

Sounds like the two things are linked. Loss of VSS will cause the EGR system to malfunction which results in the issues you talk about. Before changing the electronics in the car look at the VSS sender at the transmission. Loose or corroded wires can cause intermittent operation or a possible mechanical problem with the VSS sender itself. Always look at the external stuff first since it is subjected to all sorts of weather etc. LOL
