Dash light install

The light behind my tach went out so I bought some blue replacement bulbs to put in the dash and figured I'd better ask how to do it before I really screw something up.

if u are talking about the built in tach, it is most likely 194 bulbs, small wedge type, they are a direct replacement for the clear ones

It's a little tricky the first time, just make sure you work carefully and patiently. IIRC, Lower steering tilt to bottom. Remove +/- 6 torx screws from the instrument bezel and remove it. Remove the 2 nuts in each lower corner of the assembly. I think they're 9mm. Start to slide the whole thing out and once you fit your hand behind the left side, you need to remove the speedo cable or wires. Mine is an 84 and has a cable that pops right out when you press on rhe retainer on the back off the speedo. Once disconnected you have to tilt and angle it to get it out. If you can reach the bulbs at this point, there's no reason to completely remove the assembly. Just give the bad bulb a 1/4 turn CCW and it'll come out. The rest of this procedure is fairly obvious.
It's alot of trouble for one bulb. And adding only one blue light will hardly achieve the effect that most are looking for. If you can read the gauges then just drive.
Now if you are serious about having some killer blue light radiated from your gauges and reflecting off your white T-shirt at night than you have to forget those blue bulbs (they only make the light darker) and go with an LED conversion. There's an excellent tech article about it. I did it on my friends 89' Suburban with blue LED's (2 per socket). It looks sick. The soldering and resistors weren't easy on those little sockets, but luckily the burb only has 6. Our camaros have 11.
Let me know if you are interested, cause I could preassemble all 11 and sell them to you. Now that would be a worthy reason to pull your gauges.

well I can't see the right side of my instument panel at night and figured I'd just put in some blue lights for now, one of my license plate lights went out too so I was just going to put the old bulb that works back there (both 194's)

Thanks

To weberusn,

The part number for the bulbs is #194, if you have the socket in yours that says to replace whole assembly. You can find them in junkyards or buy them in some auto parts stores. You can buy the #194 bulbs almost anywhere.

Hey thanks Trick. Yeah I am just looking for the stock replacement bulbs. I am not to savy when it come to electronics and am afraid if I tried the LED upgrade I would mess up severely unless there is an easy way like a direct replacement.

Thanks man
