ignition noise

Ok, I did a search and tried the grounding stuff. Need help.

I just put TPI into my '71 chevelle. Now I get ignition noise through the radio. It sounds like I'm picking up every spark.

It does not get louder when I turn up the volume. At very low volume I get a pretty loud whine. I can turn up the volume and the music gets louder but the whine stays the same.

Some days it's worse than others.

notes on the install:
all grounding goes directly back to the battery. several wires from the engine, manifolds, and chassis.

Power for coil is fed through a relay direct from battery.

any ideas?

There isn't a good battery to chassis ground. There isn't a good chassis to body ground. You're not using spark plug wires that have good RFI/EMI suppression.

you can also get a RFI suppressor, that goes inline on the power wire to the radio. IT helped mine. I had the noise too, i had the correct spark plug wires and added an extra ground. But the supressor solved it for me. Go to a car audio store and pick up one. They don't cost much.

Thanks, Problem solved.

I used an RFI suppressor from Radio shack, noise gone. Seems it was not ingnition noise, but noise from the charging system.

You guessed it, two days later I only have 10v and car won't start! Either alternator or regulator was bad. Replaced it.
