What is purpose of neutral safety switch?

Have to special order a new one for my 4-spd man. Camaro. What is the purpose of this and can it be bypassed? Was thinking of splicing a fuse in there. Can I do it?

Thanks,
Brandon

I think it prevents the car from being started in gears other than neutral or park. It may also operate the backup lights. It also prevents the hatch from being popped while that car is in gear if you have a power hatch release.
I think thats basically what it does. May send info on what gear your in to the ecm, but I dont know for sure on that one.
I could be wrong. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am.

I think what you're saying applies to auto cars. I know they have several wires going to the NSS. Mine is a manual and is a funky looking thing mounted on the clutch pedal with a yellow and purple wire going to it.

One other question! I found a white and orange wire going to some type of connector. It's not connected to anything and is located near the clutch. Any idea what this is?

Thanks,
Brandon

well i wouldnt personally do this myself, but u could always jump the purple and yellow wire, but then that bypasses the neutral switch all together, which isnt too safe

as for the orange and white, that was most likely for a light that is installed to shine down in the footwell

What do you mean it isn't too safe? What could happen? I was thinking up wiring up a fuse between those two wires.

it wouldnt make sense to put a fuse in there

what i meant is if u dont wanna replace the switch, u hook those 2 wires together, and then u dont have to press the clutch down to start the car, but obvisily that is somewhat dangerous, being able to start in while the transmission is engaged

Just as long as the car is in neutral, that's not a problem! Thanks!

I bypassed mine when it went out.
just remember when you are starting the car from the outside that you are in neutral, otherwise the car will start to lurch forward.

Watched a guy start a manual car, reached in the window, turned the key, it was in first gear, clutch switch bypassed. It was deep geared to--it actually started and went half way through an overhead door. Oh, the hood was up because he just did an oil change The owner bypassed the clutch switch (and admitted it), the shop didn't pay anything.

Yeah, it can be a "fill your pants" feeling when you start the car up and shoot 10 feet forward. It's a pretty unsafe way to wake up in the morning. I did that once. Important word here is "ONCE". I almost took out some lady with a shopping cart. After that, the switch was RE-Activated. Get a new switch.

I've actually done that in my auto car. I installed the shifter cable wrong i guess, didn't snap it in the bracket completely so when i put it in park it stayed in reverse. So i was about to check the timing, i started it from standing outside and it flew back into my fence destroying it and crushing the garbage cans, narrowly missed my sisters car. Parents weren't too happy about all that, lol.

when I changed my car to a manual I just stuck a paper clip in the connector for the safety switch, then again Im used to the no clutch safety switch cause my RX-7 never had one (from the factory) a lot of newer mopars dont either (from the factory) so what is GM trying to tell its drivers??? they have no faith!
