LG4 computer removal
Hey, i wanted to remove my computer from my 84 Z28, LG4, 5 speed. I was just wondering what parts i need to do the job... From what ive read is i need a new distributor, but is that it? What else runs off the ECM? i was just makin sure before i pull all the wiring out and find out that the car dosnet run. thanks alot of everyone who helps on this board!
P.S. i know it may be a stupid idea to remove the comp, but please dont gimme no heat about this, id rather have all engine and the bare minimum to make my car run good, then fumbling with burnt wires or other wires just hanging on me. I basically wanna clean everything up a little bit, thats all, so id appreciate it if i didnt get any flame for this, thanks alot guys...

If your '84 is anything like my '87 LG4/T5 you might want to reconsider. There are a lot of connectors on that friggin' motor man. I'd rather soder a few wires than hope it would still run after removing the ECM.

what kind of connectors do you mean? when i got the car there were like 4 or 5 plugs just hangin and i couldnt find out where they went so i removed them, i have a new mechanical oil pressure and water temp already, it dosent look like theres too many things left.

I removed the ecm and cc emissions stuff from my 84z. its not really much work at all, just get yourself a new distributor and carburetor (recommend holley or a old qjet, dont get edelcrap). when you pull out the ecm you can pull its wiring harness out throught the hole in the car (you'll see what I mean
) and from there its pretty much self explanitory... you won't get it at first but study it enough and you'll get it.. trust me

From what i understand i need a non computer controlled carb and distributor, but what ones should i get? Can i get one from a junkyard thats different than mine or would i have to buy one at a store or online? Also, im planning on doing a swap to a 350 in the spring and i wanted to know if i can get one that will fit my 305 and the new tree-fitty? I have a holley carb with an electric choke. Would I have to get one thats manual choke? If not how can i tell if the carb is non computer controlled? Thank You...

You're doing exactly what I'm in the process of right now. Mtg 305 died two days ago so I ordered a new 350. I'm putting a Holley 600 w/electric choke and a regular GM HEI distributor from Advance Auto Parts ($99.00).
You can tell the difference between a cc carb and non-cc carb by the lack of electrical connections on the non-cc carb.
(I was hoping someone in the know would reply to your post before my motor got here because I wasn't real sure of what to pull either).

The distributor has the wires from the dist. to the coil and then use the wires that were in the tach and battery slots. That's all there is too it.
By the way, I just pulled out my computer. I did it the wrong way, but learned the right way. Disconnect the two connectors from the computer, then push the junction block through the hole it's already in and pull the wires out into the engine bay. It won't go the other direction. I know!!
The spade connectors on the carb should be on the choke. One's a ground and the other hot. It shouldn't make any difference which is which.

is there anyway to test it by unplugging all the wires to the ECM then trying to start the car and see if anythings wrong or could this do some damage? thanks again guys!

Your Holley carb. is perfect for the job... Just wire in the choke per the manual or look around online. You will need a vaccuum advance distributor (I got one off ebay for 25 bucks and still in there after 2 years)
