Alternator problem

I have a charging problem with my car, i changed out the gauge cluster, because it wasn't working very good and went for a drive. When i came back it was running kinda rough and i shut it off and it wouldn't restart..acted like the battery was dead. I jumped it and unhooked the battery when it was running, and it died..this tells me that the alternator is junk, took it in and the auto parts store tested it and said it was fine. I bought a new battery and it still dies when i dissconnect the battery with it running. Are these cars suppose to do that? Every other vehicle i have owned it stayed running if the alternator was good. I don't know what else to check, the alternator tested good, the battery is new and the starter is not very old. Anybody think that its maybe something in the new cluster. It just seems weird. Help !!!

i found that for some reason the alternator doesn't energize. I don't really know what this means, does anybody know of diagram that shows the correct way the alternator is to be hooked up and what wires do what??

I don't think you are supposed to unhook the battery with the car on. The battery acts as a sort of filter.

If its not charging, then it probably is the alternator unless there is a small short somewhere that is draining everything. I'd check and see if the wires going to the alt. are secure also.
