ideas on what is wrong with cig lighter

heres the deal
i just got a cig lighter for my car (its been missing ever since i got the car) i put the cig lighter in it blew the fuse, and the horn and dome light wouldn't work.
So i replaced the fuse, with the lighter out of the socket the horn and dome light worked, but when i put the lighter in the fuse blew, and made it so the horn and dome wouldn't work.

You prolly got a bad wire somewhere. Thats what happened to mine. Check for bare wires that might be touching metal under there.

yeah, you have a short somewhere. The same fuse that does all the accessories(dome light and crap like that) also does the cig lighter. Find the bad wire/connection and you'll fix the problem.

i realize that its shorting but the thing is, when i plugged in other stuff like a cell phone charger it worked fine
(bad cig lighter maybe, causing it to draw too much current)

you got a factory one right?? a lot of the parts store replacements wont work in the 90-92 cars try one from a junkyard (they're so cheap they're practically free)

OMG, i was having that problem the other day. (cig lighter) It's so wierd that you said that because mine kept blowing the fuse everytime i replaced it.(the fuse) I found out that the two wires leading to the cig lighter were touching eachother. Thought maybe this might help you. To see if it's the lighter, take an ohm meter and connect those two wires together, dont just connect em together b/c that ill blow the fuse again. If everything works good with the ohm meter hooked up, the lighter probably has something wedged in it; inside or outside of it. BTW, anyone ever ran there cig lighter to accesory or radar detector strait right into the dash? Damn thing stays on when car is off. errrrrrr

That is probably why it was missing when you got the car. My '92 does the same thing with the factory lighter. It now resides in the console.

For some reason the body of the lighter shorts out the lighter socket. I discovered this one night (it was dark) when I put the lighter back into the socket and saw it sparking/shorting out. Then it stopped sparking as the fuse had blown, again. . .

Yeah, I'm notrious for blowing the lighter fuse also. Most of the time it's the wires crossing or the lighter casing it self touching a wire and popping. Course I have dropped a dime in it accidently once... hehe POP!
