Whacky voltage!!

Well this is some kind of weird problem.
I made a long journey over the weekend, from one end of Germany to the other... And a weird thing occured when flooring it! (You know the german autobahns are partly without speed limit). So, when flooring it for a kick start, I was in OD, and I guess I only saw that because it was night, the voltage became VERY unsteady, went up down up down and the lights dimmed and became bright and so on.. Went away when I left the gas alone. Engine didn't whine or something. It happened three times on the way home. Flooring it, voltage goes up and down and up and down...
Maybe someone has an idea about what this could be. Is my alt. going south? Isn't it able to deliver enough voltage? Or is it a simple problem of the belt not being tensioned enough?
I checked this the other day, everything is alright there...
I also had some starting problems when the car was sitting for like a minute, always needed 6 to 8 cranks for the engine to run, voltage was low mostly (around 8V) ar started without problem but went dead immediately after.
I hope somebody can help me here

Thanks.....

sounds to me like an alternator but the only experince ive had with a bad alternator was when mine threw its bearings. not very nice. i smelt burning plastic smell and a huge grinding noise got out and saw that little pieces of metal were stripped out of my alternator. the onlt advie i can give is check the back of the alternator and make sure there is a cap over the cicrle int the center you should see (when new like a orangey hard circular seal with a spinning dowel looking object in the middle. if this cap isnt there and all u see is a circle of bearings or a few missing you need a knew alternator. who knows. hope this helps

It is possible that the rotor inside your alternator has a broken wire, and at low rpms the wire still conducts properly but flies out of place at high rpms. This would explain why the alt is delivering power at low speeds, but acts erratically at higher rpms. I've seen this happen sometimes.

Suggest you get the alt tested.
