help with burning out switch

my car has always been like this since i got it used. there is a red wire from the fuse box that goes to all the run hot stuff (guages, radio, etc.). it then splits into several wires (looks factory) one of the wires that splits off goes to a switch in which the other contact is connected to hot. so flicking the switch is just like turning the key to on, and flicking it off shuts the car off. the only problem is there is a lot of amps being drawn threw this switch and it blows every once in a while (and its 50 amps!). is there anyway i can rewire this/hook it back up how its supposed to/etc. and ideas would be greatly appreciated!! thanks!

p.s.- its a 91

If you don't want the switch in there anymore, just remove it and solder the wires back together. If you want the switch there and just want to make sure it keeps working right, wire up a relay in place of the switch, and have a switch trip the relay.

do it like this with a SPDT relay:

pin 87 goes to one side of the cut wire
pin 30 goes to the other side of the cut wire
pin 85 goes to 12+ constant
pin 86 goes to ground

Then cut the wire in half that goes to pin 86, and install your switch there.

If you say that you have a continuous 50 amp draw, MAKE SURE that you get a relay that will support 50 amp continuous or you will fuse the tangs together inside the relay and kill your battery.

Let me know if you have any questions on what to do here

Matt

alright yea i was thinking of doing that next but i had troulbe finding a relay above 50amps. if i cant find one, do you know if maybe there is a single, or at least just a few, grounds from the fuse block that most of the accesories use so maybe i could switch that on and off? or does each device have its own ground? thanks for your idea! im definitly gonna try that now

ok this is pry a really stupid question but is it safe to make a switch that just kills the ground to the battery? is there any other ground wire i can switch off that would shut the car off safely and shut off the electronics?

All the wires coming off the fuse box are hot, and the accessories are grounded to chassis by the individual components.

You'll need to use a high amp relay to cut the ground by the battery also, even higher then the 50 amp for the other wire. It would have to be able to take the current of the entire car, something like 110 amps
