Just hook up the power source for the meter to any 12 volt hot when the engine is running source. I spliced mine into the stock harness, using the factory wire for the factory volt gauge to power my Autometer.
Another option is to use the terminal specifically for this purpose on the back of the alternator.

You'd be better off connecting to the 12 volt keyed plug in the fuse box. Then you don't need to run the wire through the engine compartment.
The old style 12SI and 10SI alsternators have a red wire and brown (sometimes white or other colors) wire that control the stator and the rectifier respectively. The white wire should be a reference signal to the rectifier assembly, so you wouldn't want to tap something off of this wire that will produce a current draw, even if it is a relatively small one. The result could be overcharging the system and burning up the alternator.
Use the 12 volt keyed tap. You can use a spade connector to plug into it, or they often sell a pigtail for it at parts stores. There are at least two taps, and one is 12 volt constant. Use a test light if you are unsure. Plugging in to the 12 volt constant will result in eroneous readings.
