TA headlights stay up and dash light go out?

TA headlights stay up and dash light go out?
my gf's car started doing this last week and i've got no clue what its up to.
when driving for a bit, the dash lights will go out. pull in to park and turn the headlights off. the lights go off but the headlight buckets stay in the up position.
come back out a few hours later and the headlights are down (by themselves?!) and the dash lights work again.
anyone have any ideas? or is the car posessed....
