car won't start, VATS key?!

5 days ago I got in my car to leave, turned the key and the engine did nothing. My radio works, my lights work, the guages work and even respond to my turning the key to where the starter would normally crank. I replaced the starter, thinking it was bad. This did nothing but waste money, same problem. The security light does not come on at all. I have a 89 firebird v6 2.8 with the VATS system and key. My steerign column is loose and jiggle around, so does the ignition keyhole. I was able to start the car by turning the key to the run position and touching both poles on the starter with a screwdriver. My question is how do I get my key to start my car again?

Check your starter enable relay. Should be under the left hand kick panel.

I opened it all up, there are a bunch of wires runing in, some wires run into a box wrapped in black sticky tape, there are 4 wired going in: big and small yellow, and big and small green. Is there something I can do to check it out? It is open at the top, some of the sticky came off, but other than that there are no obvious signs of anyhting being screwed up.

I would replace it if it is in the condition that you say it is in. The case has obviously been broken at some point and possibly suffered some internal damage to the relay coils.
