'88 Alternator on '85 car?

Hi
('85 Z28 305)
My alternator has died and the only replacement I've been able to get hold of is a new Excel, but it's for an '88-89. This is the UK and (non-overpriced) parts are difficult to find - quotes for new alternators of 175 UK pounds (over $300) for example!
Problem is, the old alternator only has the main output lug and a two-pin spade connector on the back (although the VIN is definitely '85, it's got the 84 alternator wiring. Transitional phase?).
The new alternator has the '85-up 4-pin SFLP connector.
Does anyone have info on whether this is an OK swap to do, and how I wire up the SFLP connector to the 2-pin loom?
Many thanx

if you can get a connector for the 88 alt., the wiring (other than the plug) is the same, you will only use 2 of those 4 terminals

ermmm..... those two connectors being S,F,L or P?
The wire colours in the loom I have are brown (into loom from output lug) and red (to battery).

if so, the big wire still goes to the back, the red wire from the harness goes to S and the brown goes to L
