thanx dead

but the only problem is if i read the diagram right is there is a brown wire that goes to the fuse box but damned if i can find it for the alternator and the only way i can get the car to start is to ground the yellow wire that goes to the speed sensor on the trans. why in the world did i get the crazy idea to get rid of this bundle of wires????? lord have mercy. thomas

Thomas, if you root through the wiring at the bulkhead (drivers side firewall, next to the brake booster), you should be able to locate the brown (or brown with white stripe.. depends) for the alt. Has the plug to the alt. been chopped out of the car ? The alt wire should be on the same harness plug as the heavier gauge (14ga) red wire that runs to the starter.
Regardless, this shouldn't affect weather the car starts or not.

If I'm not mistaken, your year 'bird has VATs (resistor in the key). This may be what is causing your start problem. I'm not very familiar with how it works but, I believe there is a relay inline on the power wire from the ignition switch to the park/neutral safety switch on the shifter. by-passing this should allow you to turn the starter.

The only wiring you need to make a carb'd car go is power to the alt for charging, the ignitino switch (obvious too) and a switched +12v to the coil (generally a 14ga wire) on the distributor.

It's odd how walking away and returning to something can change your perspective and state of mind, huh ? Glad to be able to assist, though just a diagram, and hear you made progress.
