How many volts to coil when cranking?

Can't seem to get my coil to fire and see 12 volts to the lead when unhooked with ign on but when I crank it drops to just about 9.3 or so, how many volts does a coil need to fire? It is a crane coil and I was able to fire up my vette with it so it is def good.

Thanks

That's normal during cranking. Yes it will fire with 9 volts, that's pretty much textbook voltage during cranking. Suspect either the pickups or the ign module. One side of the primary of the coil should go to 12 volts with the key on, the other side of the primary gets switched on and off, usually you can only see that with a scope.

9 volts is the minimum GM says you should have while cranking, so you are good there. How's the secondary coil down in the dist? If it is shot you'll never get it to fire.
