Need help disconnecting the harnesses
Need help disconnecting the harnesses
Hey everybody,
I am in the process of hacking (I mean carefully taking out and labeling) everything from under the hood of my 88 camaro. The plan is to eventually put a new engine in there, but before it goes in, I want to work on the body and get it all nice and shiny, so I want to remove everything that's non-body. So far, sounds like a plan, right?
Here's the problem. I've disconnected the wire harnesses everywhere except where they go into the firewall for the dashboard and on the right side for the ECM. How do those connectors come apart? It appears like they are completely glued together after they've been snapped into place.
I am I missing something extremely obvious here? The one for the dashboard appears to be completely inaccessible from inside the car unless the whole dash is taken apart, but from the engine side, it looks and feels like it is one solid piece.
I could really use help on this one, guys. Thanks

Sounds like a plan to me. Im not sure how to fully remove the harness. What I can tell you is that the harness that plugs into the firewall on the driverside has a single bolt in the center of the connecter. Just remove that and you should be able to unplug that harness with alittle effort. It should be easy to figure out the rest of it from there. Its been a couple of years so Im not sure on how to remove the rest of it...but that should remove the bulk of the wiring. Hope that helps.
Bolt aye? You wouldn't happen to remember how this bolt is accessed? 'cause it is not on the hood side. So is the plan really to take apart half the dashboard?
If that's the case ECU may have the same kind of setup, the connectors look similar (at least in the fact that they are completely solid)
I've seen pictures of harnesses on this board laying on the ground, so I know it is possible, but so far I cannot come up with humane approach to this.

If you are talking about the wire harness at the firewall on the drivers side. There should be a plastic cover over it. Remove the cover and you will see a bolt in the center of it. This holds the connector together, there should be two other bolts that hold the connector to the firewall.
P.S. this is done from under the dash.

It's been a while since i took the ECM harness out but there is a clip type thing that holds the wires where they go throw the body behind the fender. I forget if it is acessable from behind the kick panel or from behind the fender but you remove the clip and then the hole is big enough to get the ecm connectors through.
