Pulldown hatchs are problems on these cars. If you remove the panel that covers the motor, you can usually find that the plastic part of the motor that mounts to the back of the car breaks, because it is weak. This either leaves the hatch open a bit and lets rain water into the back of the car and hurts the motor, or the motor sags down and the latch will not catch when you lower the hatch, so you slam it, and it breakes worse.

Look on this site for the Tech articles, scroll down towards the bottom under general repairs, and at the bottom of that heading is instructions on how to repair the pulldown motors.

Good luck

I wrote that Tech Article a few years back. You'll find the parts you need to repair the hatch pull-down unit available on my web site. Just click on the TDS sponsor link at the top of the page.
